    لیلا در کل فیلمی با محوریتِ کاراکترِ لیلا با بازی خوبِ ترانه علیدوستی است.
    این بازیگر تجسم زنی است که با سنت‌های مندرس خانوادگی مبارزه می‌کند
    و تسلیم نمی‌شود. این فیلم با وجود دیالوگ‌های زیاد و طولانی
    بودن بیش از حد، یک تراژدی نسبتا موفق است.

    سعید روستایی با روش‌های مختلفی خود را از دیگر
    فیلم‌سازان متمایز کرده
    است. یکی از همین روش‌ها نیز جریانی حماسی است که او به داستان می‌دهد که
    در این فیلم، روی داستان پدرسالار
    و وارثانش تمرکز دارد که همانند نسخه‌ای تهرانی و طبقه کارگری
    از پدرخوانده احساس می‌شود. به نوشته این منتقد
    سینمایی، حماسه خانوادگی حیرت‌انگیز و تقریبا سه ساعته سعید روستایی، با تراکم روایی یک رمان روسی و بینش‌های فردی شدید یک کتاب درسی روان‌شناسی، پله‌های نردبانی چوبین را که زنده‌ماندن در تهران معاصر تنها با بالارفتن از
    آن میسر است، در هم می‌شکند.
    دیوید جنکینز برادران لیلا را که درباره زندگی یک خانواده فقیر تهرانی در میانه
    فروپاشی است، یک «ناک اوت» سینمایی توصیف
    کرده‌است. سعید روستایی فیلم‌ساز ایرانی یک درام خانوادگی بزرگ، جذاب و شخصیت‌محور
    را به سبک ایتالیایی-آمریکایی با اجراهای خشن، صحنه بزرگ عروسی و تاثیرپذیری‌هایی از «روکو و برادرانش» ساخته ویسکونتی و «پدرخوانده»ی کوپولا ارائه می‌کند.
    در رأس همه این مردان بیهوده و
    انگلی، پدر سالخورده آنها اسماعیل (سعید پورصمیمی) قرار دارد
    – مردی که مکرراً ناله می‌کند، خود رحم است، معتاد به تریاک است و وسواس
    به «پدرسالاری» طایفه‌ی پر جمعیت خود دارد.

    حتی در دعواها و درگیری های فیلم هم
    نشانه هایی از آرتور میلر دیده می شود.
    پدر آن‌ها نیز اسماعیل با
    بازی سعید پورصمیمی است که می‌خواهد بچه‌هایش و همچنین خانواده و طایفه‌اش به او
    احترام بگذارند، به خصوص پس از اینکه پدرسالار پیر این خاندان از دنیا می‌رود و همین باعث می‌شود تا اسماعیل خودش را فرد مناسبی برای جایگاه او ببیند.
    اما از این لایه اتفاقا فراگیر و به اصطلاح تماشاگر پسند که بگذریم، فیلم در سطح دیگری
    می‌کوشد با استفاده از همان
    پوسته‌ی روبنایی‌اش روند فروپاشی خانواده درون فیلم را واکاوی کند که گاها به دلایل گوناگون به تمثیل
    و تشبیه روی می‌آورد.
    این نمایش دور باطلی است که آدم‌ها
    را در خود می‌چرخاند و به نقطه‌ی دردناک‌تر از اول فیلم
    می‌رساند. با این تفاوت که نه تنها چیزی به دست نیاورده‌اند که
    از دست داده‌اند. روستایی برای طراحی شیوه انتقال مفاهیم مورد نظرش گاها از قرینه‌هایی بهره
    می‌گیرد که گاه با فاصله زیاد نسبت به هم قرار گرفته‌اند اما به راستی مکمل یکدیگرند.

    تنها فرزند خانواده که به ندرت توسط چیزی
    یا کسی فریب می‌خورد، لیلا
    است. لیلا مصلحت‌گرا و مجرد است و تنها فرزند خانواده محسوب می‌شود
    که شغل و درآمدی مناسبی دارد.
    او مدام شاهد تصمیمات اشتباه پدر و برادرانش
    است و همینیکی از نکات مهم در این فیلم به شمار می‌رود که پر از ایده‌ها و نقدهای اجتماعی است.

    سبک سعید روستایی با دیگر کارگردانان تفاوت دارد، یکی از همین تفاوت‌ها نیز
    جریانی حماسی است که او به داستان می‌دهد که در
    این فیلم، روی داستان پدرسالار و وارثانش تمرکز دارد که همانند نسخه‌‌ی ایرانی پدرخوانده است.
    سعید روستایی باردیگر برای فیلمبرداری فیلم خود با هومن بهمنش همکاری کرده است.
    این کارگردان از روشی رایج در دهه‌ی هفتاد میلادی (زوم کردن به‌طور آرام) در فیلم‌هایش استفاده می‌کند.
    بدین ترتیب در یک شات، ما را از مشکلات و گرفتاری‌های جامعه‌ی ایرانی به درد
    و رنج‌های یک خانواده پرت می‌کند.
